Merger plans to create Britain’s biggest trade union with strong positions in the banking, aerospace, car manufacturing and transport sectors were given the final go-ahead on Thursday.
Members of the Transport and General Workers Union and Amicus voted in favour of the merger, which will create a combined union with about 2m members, outstripping Unison, the largest public sector union, which has 1.3m members.
Amicus and T&G, which already have co-operation agreements with the powerful IG Metall union in Germany and the United Steel Workers and International Association of Machinists in the US, say the merger will further the “creation of a single global trade union movement...challenging the might of multinationals.â€
